Amir's actions were really surprising when seeing his best friend beaten and raped in front of him. Amir was cowardly and selfish when Baba congratulates Amir for winning. However I don't understand why Amir never did anything. Not a good friend.
I agree with what you're saying DH, but think about the prior feelings Amir has expressed towards Hassan. Is he in the right to a small extent? All he wants is his fathers approval, and if it means leaving Hassan behind it seems it's what he'll do.
