if the twins didnt fall asleep would the pilots who were in a heated dog fight even have seen the fire had it been lit?

    This is a good inference, if the pilots weren't fighting maybe the boys on the island could have been saved but also possibly, if the boys kept the fire lit they would of had another chance at being rescued.
